MAN AT THE END OF BLACK RIVER (F/F)

A man lives under a motorway bridge over a polluted river where it meets the sea on the outskirts of picturesque Cape Town. Trying to rebuild his life after 10 years in prison, Zane's back story reveals an upbringing in a poor white community, drug addiction, a car chase and shoot out with the police followed by a 10 year prison sentence for armed robbery. This documentary develops its narrative through a video blog-like technique (filmed over 2 years) and is an intimate portrait of a man living in an appalling environment. The filmmaker probes Zane's psychology, drawing a parallel of him as social outcast with the social psychology of littering, pollution and greed in a larger context. Surprising things about Zane begin to emerge, including the revelation of a colourful but complicated sex life. A charming character with a detailed knowledge of his environment, he is by turns complicated and cunning. But is he hiding something darker? Getting to know Zane and his environment is both fascinating and lesson in not accepting things at face value. It also draws an ugly picture of wider society. * This is a rough cut documentary in 3 parts. 1st part submitted other 2 available.
